I have been in photography for over 6 years and if there was one quote that I've heard more than any other it has to be, "I don't think I need to hire a photographer, do I?" That is a question that only you the individual can answer. You have to think about what type of event you're having or what you plan on having photographed. People can only see so many selfies before they start to wonder, "Does that person even know anybody that can take a photo for them?" I have come up with six reasons why you do not need a professional photographer but they are also reasons why you might want to consider hiring one too!
1. I own a computer or smartphone with great photo editing software.
This day and age you probably have a phone with 10 different apps with photo editing abilities or apps like Instagram with filters. Although, professional photographers typically have extremely capable or new computers with the latest and greatest photo editing software. Most utilize applications that can cost hundreds of dollars.
2. I have my own nice camera.
You may have a new phone with a 50 megapixel sensor or maybe your spouse bought you a Nikon 3200 for Christmas so now you don't NEED a pro. Although, professional photographers have spent thousands of dollars accumulating camera bodies, lenses and lighting to help them accomplish taking beautiful images for you.
3. I don't need to be in any of the photos.
There are many events in which you do not need to be in any of the photos that are taken such as kids birthdays, holidays etc. Although, you might look back at photographs from previous events and wished you were in more of them therefore hiring a photographer may have been a better option.
4. I have taken a photography class in H.S. and know the basic rules of composition.
Although you may know the rule of thirds, you are no expert. Typically professional photographers have spent hundreds of hours honing in on their craft and learning different techniques through classes, books, conferences and forums and that knowledge is evident in their work.
5. The event is outside at noon so my phone will work fine.
One of the most amateur mistakes while shooting photographs is failing to realize how big of a light source the sun is. This leads to harsh light which causes blown out images and harsh shadows on peoples faces and people taking sunglasses off to create squinty faces. Professional photographers have a keen eye for light sources. They either have experience with the location or are aware of different techniques to use in order to get great images in the middle of the day.
6. I don't need to pose anyone anyway, they are just supposed to be candid shots.
Ever been tagged in a picture on Facebook or instagram that you didn't even know was being taken? I have and it sucks. Sometimes you are "scratching" your nose or just took a shot of fireball so you have that face. Professional photographers take a ton of photos and they know what to look for when it comes to capturing emotions and special moments. You won't end up with a bunch of stiffs or overly cheesy fake poses.
After you have thought about all of these items long and hard then, and only then, should you consider taking your own photos or the cousin who you think has a nice camera. Know that us photographers work very hard and after you glance at a portfolio you can decide if they are worth coughing up the extra dough for or not. The choice is yours. If you need a guy I know one ;)
